The Nordic Council and the Council of Ministers in 1996 took initiative for starting a co-operation between the Scandinavian/Nordic large cities (cities with more than 160.000 inhabitants), concerning Youth and prevention of drug-taking and criminality.
The first conference took place in the autumn 1997 in Aarhus, Denmark. In 1999 the conference was held in Reykjavik, Iceland in 2001 in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2003 in
Oslo, Norway in 2005 in Helsinki, Finland and in 2007 in Odense, Denmark. (Please

Göteborg, Sweden will be host in 2009.
Nordic Large City Conference has the following purposes:
Nordic Large City Conference is the forum for and presents the most actual research
in Scandinavia inside the area: The conditions of growing-up within the childhood and
adolescence.
“The conference is to get the leading scholars, mainly from Scandinavia, involved”.
“The conference is to involve the children and youngsters-practical persons, who are breaking new ground within their field.”
“The conference is meant to involve the personalities who can inspire to new initiatives inside the Nordic work for the conditions for children and youngsters.”
The participants in the conference are a mix of: Politicians, representatives of the municipal administration and practical persons.
The five previous conferences have had between 250-300 participants.
